My personal favourite is the widow reduction expression. You need to set the character style first before you set up your GREP expression. There are two parts: the character style to be applied, and the content or variable that the character style will be applied to. GREP expressions (or code) are set in the GREP Style tab of the Paragraph Style Options dialog box. For example, if you have a bold character style GREP may override it with a non-bold modification instead. It responds dynamically to apply or remove styles when certain text is added, edited or deleted.īecause GREP is automatic, it can potentially override character styles you have already set. This article deals with GREP in text styles I call it "non-destructive GREP" because it does not permanently alter content. There are two ways to use GREP in InDesign. I work on long documents so GREP is useful to automate repetitive typographic tasks. Where GREP differs is that it's much more granular, giving precise control over the trigger situation and the result. If you're familiar with nested styles, GREP (Global Regular Expression Print) is similar: you are applying a character style to override a paragraph style in specific situations. Create and publish books, digital magazines, eBooks, posters, and interactive PDFs with InDesign. The examples below will work in any version of InDesign. This article assumes familiarity with text styles in Adobe InDesign. The command below will show 5 lines before the matching ones along with the matching line (s). Similarly, you can use the -B option to show lines before the matching ones. Sprinkle some automated artworking magic into your InDesign styles with GREP The command below will show the matching lines along with the 5 lines after the match.
